Our speakers in these themed webinars have been involved in significant and large-scale implementations in assessment. The sessions will include examples of how international awarding organisations leverage the use of online assessment to provide relevant and valid testing on a global scale. Presenters will examine how this impacts on regulation and strategy for a nation, approaches in HE and dealing with the ever-present realities of malpractice. Examples of secure delivery of assessments in challenging circumstances will be discussed and will demonstrate that technology is often not the issue in making change.

Remote proctoring – the future of invigilation for e-assessment?
Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing (CAAT) delivers high-stakes assessments in a variety of contexts around the world, designed to aid selection onto high-stakes courses at a range of institutions. An increasing challenge is the provision of computer-based exams in countries where much of the candidature is in remote, rural locations, far from test centres. This workshop will consider the challenges and benefits of remote proctoring in such contexts, taking as a case study CAAT’s use of a remote proctoring tool in rural India. In this interactive session, delegates will be invited to reflect on how technology can be integrated into large-scale international projects, discuss the future of remote proctoring, and consider how assessment providers can widen access to e-assessments without compromising exam security.

Ofqual, the qualifications regulator for England, will outline how it is seeking to support good innovation in the qualifications market, including new uses for technologies in assessment. It will outline its
– strategy to support good innovation
– research into a potential role for the use of AI in marking, including its launch of a data science challenge on AI marking
– review of the barriers to greater adoption of online and on-screen assessment in schools and colleges
Discussion groups will give attendees the opportunity to comment and feedback on Ofqual’s plans to implement new ways for innovators to seek the regulator’s views on their proposals.

Are we all on the same page?’ The challenge of e-assessment terminology
Technology has played a crucial role in enhancing assessment practices across the disciplines, from facilitating large-scale testing and improving efficiency owing to an increase in student numbers, to the recognition that well-designed and deployed electronic assessment (e-assessment) initiatives offer a variety of benefits to all involved. However, whilst the literature reports on staff and student experiences with e-assessment, there is little attention given to the proliferation of terms used when describing the various forms of learning and assessment capable through the use of technology.
Drawing on the findings from an institutional ethnographic (Smith, 2005) study into electronic assessment (e-assessment) practices in HE, this session focuses on one aspect of the research; how the term ‘e-assessment’ is understood by those involved in its design and implementation in practice. Whilst the findings show a variation in definition between staff in different roles, such practice is also consistent with the variation evident in the literature. This session will stress the need for a common language for e-assessment, particularly since it is often commonplace in educational literature to see technology and e-assessment practices in a variety of contexts described in a variety of ways, even when used in similar contexts.
The session will conclude by highlighting several challenges to be considered and overcome with regards to future e-assessment policy and practice in HE, and share some recommendations on how they may be overcome.

The Government in Wales has recently rolled out national onscreen adaptive assessments for all school children aged 7 – 14 in English and Welsh reading, and in mathematics. As a government assessment programme in schools, this represents both a highly innovative and large programme of rollout. AlphaPlus manages this programme on behalf of Welsh Government. The assessments provide formative, personalised feedback and nationally standardised performance and progress measures. This initiative is one aspect of major changes to the Welsh curriculum and we are reporting on it after one school year of operation with around 300,000 learners taking assessments on the system.

How Bolton College is using natural language classification models to support formative assessment
Delegates will learn about:
- What is Natural Language Classification?
- How teachers train their natural language classifiers.
- The use cases for deploying natural language classifiers to inform learning and assessment.
- How delegates can support the development of Bolton College’s FirstPass solution.
The emergence of this new assessment tool enables teachers to make use of a richer medium for assessing their students. Traditionally, online formative assessment activities are undertaken using closed questioning techniques such as yes/no questions, multiple-choice questions or drag-and-drop activities. Whilst valuable, this is a rather narrow way to undertake formative assessment. Our solution enables teachers to pose open-ended questions which can be automatically analysed and assessed by a computer. The ability to offer real-time feedback means that students can qualify and clarify their responses.
