2020 was the year the education sector was forced to adopt and adapt
The pandemic has brought about seismic changes all around, and the education sector is no exception.
Academic prospects and the ongoing education of more than 1.5 billion students across the globe were affected, and educational institutions were left grappling to find quick solutions.
A representative study indicated a significant shift (82%) to online education due to the pandemic compared to a low exposure (47%) to online classes before the pandemic. Examinations which form an integral part of the entire system, have also been reimagined, and many boards have successfully conducted online assessments. However, to build a resilient education and assessments space for the 21st century, institutions need to address some core aspects:
Phygital – For online assessments to be a success, the learning model has to be upgraded. Since most ancillary assessments such as vivas and practical examinations still need physical space, the entire system must transform to include phygital features.
Bridging the Industry-Academia Gap– The education system has to collaborate with industries, create future-ready talent, and keep up with the demands of the digital age.
The Digital Divide– Technology is not all-pervasive. It is generally concentrated in urban pockets. In such cases, brick and mortar schools provide primary education to the children in the area. For functions to move online, infrastructure has to be robust so that students from all demographics get equal opportunities.

Leveraging technology as a tool, continuous research and innovations need to be undertaken to make education systems that are future-ready. Similarly, remote internship programs (to help during natural calamities) and industry honour programs (to help bridge the industry academia gap) offer examples of technology adjusting to evolving needs of the industry.
Inclusive: Education is the birthright of every child. Essential tools must be readily available to students across demographics to maintain uniformity to achieve educational excellence, irrespective of a student’s location or privileges.
