Mathematics education is crucial for academic success and societal progress. Ten years ago, the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) reported that only 50% of Grade 6 students in Ontario met the provincial mathematics standard. In response, the government of Ontario introduced several initiatives including the Mathematics Proficiency Test (MPT) which became a certification requirement for teachers in 2020 to ensure they possess essential mathematics knowledge and pedagogy skills. Today the MPT serves over 10,000 candidates annually, evolving while maintaining high standards and striving to improve mathematics outcomes for more than 2 million K-12 Ontarian students.
