A103: Assessment Data and Statistics is an online course designed to help assessment practitioners confidently gather, interpret, and critically use assessment data to inform decisions and predict learner performance.
First launched in 2020, A103 has supported learners from a wide range of contexts in making effective use of their data. Following a comprehensive review, the course has been updated to better reflect the types of data assessment professionals work with in practice and to align more closely with current A10 courses.
The course focuses on practical data use in assessment, covering how data is collected, represented, evaluated, and applied across different contexts. Participants develop skills in interpreting grades, standardised scores, percentiles, and item-level data, as well as using correlation and baseline assessments to support predictions about future performance. Emphasis is placed on understanding data quality, reliability, relevance, and limitations, enabling participants to identify and address issues in the use of assessment data.
A103 is delivered as a nine-week online group course, requiring an average of around three hours of study per week. Learners have flexible, anytime access to the virtual learning environment, alongside structured weekly activities, a Monitor/Educator, discussion forums, and a reflective journal. The course also provides opportunities to connect with other assessment practitioners and share insights.
The course is particularly suitable for teachers, awarding body staff, and managers working with assessment data. A basic level of statistical literacy (equivalent to GCSE Statistics) is required. Successful participants receive a digital badge, with certification options available. The updated course also offers new outcomes for those who have previously completed A103: Introducing Data Literacy.
