Eintech Head of Product Anna Kate Phelan shares advice and insight following conference presentations for the eAA, E-ATP, and the ABNS fall meeting.
In the presentation, Anna explains the difference in ‘accessibility’ and inclusive design concepts, talks about recognition of exclusion by trying to solve a problem with our own bias, and she introduces test authors to ‘The Power of Designing for One’ – how introducing changes that solve a challenge for permanent disabilities can create a better user experience for all. A common example being the introduction of closed captions to assist people with hearing problems has now been adopted by many as a means of aiding concentration.
Anna also references a recent dynamic presentation delivered with industry peer and Head of User Experience Richard London, talking about the benefit of user research, while pointing watchers in the direction of some fantastic resources available from organisations like Microsoft.
The presentation goes on to discuss how exclusions may be permanent, temporary, or situational. For example, a candidate might struggle with a mouse and keyboard due to a temporary injury, or their performance in an exam might suffer from simple test anxiety. By considering these varied experiences, we can create:
Simple, uncluttered interfaces that reduce stress.
Culturally neutral language that avoids bias.
Flexible accommodations with empathy.
Clear communication throughout the testing journey.
Considering inclusive design at the start of your test creation journey, or as a fundamental part of your workplace philosophy requires little effort, and can have a huge positive impact on your business, and the people that take your exams.
