Preparing students for 21st-century medicine requires a forward-thinking approach. At Leicester Medical School, state-of-the-art facilities support technology-enhanced learning, and the assessment team were keen to ensure their exams kept pace with the technological advancements in the field.
While written exams were already fully digital, the practical OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examinations) assessments remained paper-based. Widely regarded in medical education as the gold standard for assessing clinical skills and strategic thinking, the team were keen to modernise these important clinical exams to align with their technology-led approach. Finding a digital solution that met all requirements, however, was a significant challenge.
The Opportunity
As many medical schools understand, OSCEs are complex to manage, with multiple stations, candidates, and examiners to coordinate. They also involve time-consuming manual processes, from preparing paper mark sheets to collecting and analysing results. Furthermore, they often provide limited opportunity for detailed student feedback due to time constraints. Recognising these inefficiencies, the medical team were keen to find a digital solution to address them.
Digital Transformation
In partnership with Speedwell Software, Leicester implemented the eSystem platform to support the OSCEs across multiple year groups, covering approximately 1,500 students annually.
Pivotal to their decision was the ability to fully test the system before purchase via a dedicated trial site. This gave the team confidence that it could meet their needs and deliver the efficiencies they were seeking. Staff and examiners found the software intuitive to use, and once they experienced the benefits, they were keen to adopt.
The Impact
Transitioning from paper-based to digital OSCEs has transformed processes. Tasks that once took days are now completed within minutes. Automated reporting provides administrators with actionable insights, and feedback reports give students detailed, personalised feedback, supporting improved learning outcomes. Administrative workload has been drastically reduced, allowing staff to focus on exam design and enhancing the student experience.
Leicester Medical School’s successful transition to digital OSCEs demonstrates how technology can deliver efficiency, insight, and a higher quality of assessment, providing a strong example of how practical exams can be modernised across medical education.
